WHEN: 03 September 2009

TIME: 7am (for 7.30am start) - 9.00am

On the 3rd September 2009, The Eidos Institute Board will be hosting a breakfast with the Right Honourable Alan Milburn. Alan is a British politician, Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Darlington, served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Health, and is the current Chairman of the UK Government’s panel on social mobility.

Alan Milburn led a radical reform of the UK’s national health service to devolve decision-making, increase provider autonomy, diversify supply and empower patients. He is a proponent of citizen-centred public services. He will discuss how supply-side reforms – including greater diversity in provision – need to be coupled with demand-side drivers – such as choice for users – in order to make modern services better attuned to the needs of the individual citizen.

On demand driven government service delivery, in his recent paper "Private Investment for Public Success" - “We stand on the cusp of a new relationship between citizen and public services. It is a future in which the public realm is not just bigger, but qualitatively better. It also a future in which reform takes hold not just in some parts but in all, and where centralised States have less power, but communities and citizens have more. At the heart of all of this lies the modernisation of public services: more consumer choice; greater community involvement; and increasing diversity in supply.”
